Foreign object debris (FOD) detection system

The foreign object debris (FOD) detection system at airports is a new surveillance system that supports airport operations. The FOD system automatically detects foreign object debris on airport runways and informs airport operators. The FOD detection system can not only just prevent accidents, resulting from FOD in advance, but also shorten the runway closure period for safety inspection. We expect CO2 emission reductions by preventing stagnation of aircraft from runway closures and a maximized usage rate of airport runways. The recent results progress and the live demonstration of the prototype FOD detection system at Tokyo International Airport is will be introduced at the exhibition.

Operational Environment for Advanced Air Mobility and Urban Air Mobility

With the emergence of Advance Air Mobility (AAM) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM), there is a need to determine how best to integrate AAM/UAM into low-altitude airspace. AAM/UAM is expected to fly at lower altitudes than existing aircraft, but their flight areas partially overlap. To help integrate AAM/UAM into low-altitude airspace safely and efficiently, this research investigates the appropriate operational environment for AAM/UAM in low-altitude airspace.

Main Facilities

【Aircraft for Flight Experiment】
Aircraft for Flight Experiment evaluates newly designed and developed systems in various studies on communications, navigation, surveillance, and other topics.
- Model: Beechcraft B300 (KingAir 350)
- Length: 14.23m
- Width: 17.65m
- Height: 4.36m
- Reg. No.: JA35EN

【Radio Anechoic Chamber】
The radio anechoic chamber provides ideal conditions for radio equipment under test as an infinite space. The chamber is built in a large shielded box with iron plates to prevent external intrusion and internal leakage. Moreover, the chamber creates non-reflective conditions to extinguish radio waves emitted inside by the wall, floor and ceiling covered with radio absorbers.
Within the chamber, performance tests for radars or communication systems emitting radio waves or measurements for antennas are conducted.
